Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a physician-supervised dermatologic procedure for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) — precancerous skin lesions caused by cumulative sun damage. At The Refinery, PDT is performed using Levulan (aminolevulinic acid, or ALA), a photosensitizing agent that is applied topically and absorbed selectively by abnormal cells. Once activated by the Blue-U light source, the Levulan destroys the targeted precancerous cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue intact.

THE BLUE-U LIGHT SOURCE

The Blue-U by DUSA Pharmaceuticals is the FDA-approved blue light device used in conjunction with Levulan ALA for photodynamic therapy. It is a clinical-grade, calibrated light source — not a consumer or retail LED device. This distinction is important: PDT is a medical procedure that requires provider supervision and is not replicated by over-the-counter products.
