Two Advanced Laser Systems: One Transformative Result

The Refinery offers two distinct Aerolase laser platforms — the Aerolase Neo Elite and the Aerolase ERA — delivering targeted, comfortable laser treatments for a wide range of skin concerns. Unlike traditional laser systems that require numbing cream, cooling gels, or extended downtime, both Aerolase platforms operate with ultra-short 650-microsecond pulses that protect the skin surface while treating the underlying tissue. Safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including darker tones (Types IV–VI).

Aerolase Neo Elite: The Gold Standard in Laser Rejuvenation

The Neo Elite delivers 1064nm Nd:YAG energy in ultra-short pulses, targeting pigment, vascular lesions, acne, and signs of aging at the dermal level. Its unique pulse duration allows deep tissue penetration without surface damage, making it one of the most versatile and comfortable lasers available. The Neo Elite is ideal for:

  • Acne: active breakouts and post-acne scarring
  • Rosacea: redness, flushing, and visible vessels
  • Hyperpigmentation: sun spots, melasma, uneven tone
  • Vascular lesions: spider veins, broken capillaries
  • Skin laxity: fine lines, wrinkles, texture refinement
  • Hair reduction: safe for all skin types
  • Nail fungus

Aerolase ERA: Targeted Erbium Resurfacing

The ERA delivers 2940nm Erbium:YAG energy — the wavelength most absorbed by water in skin tissue. This makes it exceptionally precise for superficial resurfacing, targeting fine lines, textural irregularities, and mild photodamage at the epidermal level. The ERA is ideal for:

  • Fine lines and surface wrinkles
  • Mild acne scarring and textural irregularities
  • Superficial hyperpigmentation
  • Skin smoothing and refinement
  • Brightening dull, fatigued skin

The Reverse Treatment: Exclusive Dual-Laser Protocol

The Refinery offers The Reverse Treatment, a signature protocol that combines both the Aerolase Neo Elite and Aerolase ERA in a single session. This sequenced dual-laser approach allows us to address multiple skin concerns simultaneously — targeting the deeper dermal layers with the Neo Elite and then precisely resurfacing the epidermis with the ERA. The result is a comprehensive rejuvenation that neither laser could achieve alone. The Reverse Treatment is ideal for patients seeking:

  • Maximum rejuvenation in a single appointment
  • Combined treatment of pigmentation, vascular concerns, AND surface texture
  • Accelerated results over a shorter treatment series

  • What skin conditions can Aerolase treat?

Aerolase is a versatile treatment that addresses many skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, wrinkles, pigmentation issues, vascular lesions, unwanted hair, and nail fungus. It's effective for skin renewal and can be used on all skin types and tones.
  • Is Aerolase treatment painful?

Aerolase treatments are known for being comfortable. The technology uses a unique energy pulse that's quick enough to avoid discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as warm and pleasant, without needing numbing creams or anesthesia.
  • How many Aerolase sessions will I need to see results?

Many patients notice improvements after one Aerolase session. However, the number of treatments needed varies based on your specific skin concerns and goals. During your consultation at The Refinery, we'll assess your skin and create a personalized plan to achieve the best results.
  • Contraindications - Patients who should not be treated include:

    - Individuals with sunburned, inflamed, or irritated skin in the areas to be treated
    - Patients with undiagnosed or unexplained skin conditions in the treatment area
    - Those who have experienced poor healing following previous laser treatments
    - Patients prone to abnormal skin discoloration or pigment changes
    - Patients currently taking photosensitizing medications (such as Accutane); these medications must be discontinued at least 6 months prior to treatment
    - Patients using topical Retin-A or similar products should discontinue use at least 2 weeks before treatment
    - Patients with autoimmune diseases
    - Laser energy should not be applied to raised lesions unless they are purely red (such as angiomas). All other raised or suspicious lesions should be evaluated by a dermatologist prior to treatment

Patients who are sunburned must wait until the burn has fully healed. Additionally, laser treatments—particularly around the upper lip—can trigger Herpes Simplex Labialis (fever blisters). Patients with a history of fever blisters may be prescribed antiviral medication prior to treatment as a preventive measure.
  • Setting Expectations

The best candidates for laser skin rejuvenation are patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I–III who exhibit early to advanced signs of aging, including fine lines, mild to deep wrinkles, and sun damage. While patients with other skin types may respond well, these groups tend to achieve the most predictable and consistent results.

Treatment goals, expected results, and downtime should be discussed thoroughly with your practitioner. More aggressive treatments typically produce more dramatic improvements but require longer recovery periods. Although laser resurfacing can significantly improve skin tone, texture, and appearance, the natural aging process will continue. As a result, ongoing skincare and maintenance treatments—usually within 6 to 18 months—may be recommended.
  • How Many Treatment Sessions Are Needed?

Most ablative laser treatments require only one session. However, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 6 to 18 months to address normal aging progression. In general, the more aggressive the treatment performed, the longer the interval before a follow-up session is needed.
  • Is the Treatment Painful?

Most patients experience only a mild and very tolerable sensation of heat during treatment. This level of comfort is a key innovation of Aerolase technology. The LightPod Era has set a new standard for patient comfort in laser treatments.

After the anesthetic wears off, some swelling or mild discomfort may occur depending on treatment depth. This is normal and typically resolves within a few hours to up to 48 hours post-treatment. Over-the-counter NSAIDs may be used if needed.
  • Do I Need Anesthesia or a Numbing Agent?

The need for anesthesia depends on the type and depth of treatment:

    - Superficial or sub-ablative treatments (Aerolase Era for Superficial Ablation): Topical anesthesia is often not required
    - Medium-depth treatments (for moderate sun damage and wrinkles): Topical anesthetic is recommended
    - Deep treatments (for extensive sun damage and deep wrinkles, such as Reveal): Local anesthetic injections or nerve blocks are recommended

The choice should be discussed and agreed upon by both the patient and practitioner prior to treatment.
  • Will My Lesion or Scar Be Permanently Removed?

There is a strong likelihood that lesions or scar tissue will be significantly reduced or permanently removed. However, due to ongoing aging and other biological factors, new lesions may develop over time and maintenance treatments may be necessary.

Some individuals are predisposed to hypertrophic scarring and may require multiple treatments to maintain desired results. These considerations should be discussed during the consultation process.
  • What Is the Difference Between Superficial, Medium, and Deep Ablation?

The primary differences lie in the depth of ablation and the severity of skin concerns being treated.

    Aerolase Era for Superficial Ablation
This option includes sub-ablative treatments and micro peels that target the most superficial skin layers.

    - Sub-ablative treatment: Enhances skin radiance with no downtime; suitable for skin types I–V
    - Micro peel: Slightly deeper resurfacing with minimal redness and downtime (typically 1–2 days); ideal for enlarged pores and uneven tone or texture

Aerolase Era for Medium Depth Ablation
This treatment gently vaporizes moderate sun damage and fine lines. A topical anesthetic is recommended, with typical downtime of 2 to 4 days.

Aerolase Era for Deep Depth Ablation
Designed for advanced aging concerns such as deep wrinkles and severe sun damage, this is the most aggressive option. Despite its depth, it is gentler than other traditional ablative lasers due to Aerolase’s 300-microsecond pulse duration and controlled ablation depth.

This treatment often delivers results comparable to 4–8 fractional treatments in a single session. Downtime occurs only once, and redness may last up to 3 weeks, depending on treatment depth and individual healing response. Normal activities may resume with caution and strict sun protection.
  • What Are the Risks of Skin Resurfacing?

While outcomes vary by individual, potential risks include:

    - Prolonged redness: A normal response to heat; duration depends on treatment aggressiveness
    - Hypopigmentation: Loss of natural skin pigment, more common in darker skin tones
    - Scarring: Rare, especially with proper post-treatment care and consistent moisturization
    - Infection: Uncommon; viral herpes activation is the most frequent concern—antiviral prophylaxis is recommended for all patients
    - Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Temporary darkening of the skin due to inflammation, more common in darker skin types; typically fades over time and can be treated topically

Treatment selection and risk tolerance should be carefully discussed between patient and practitioner.
  • Are the Results Permanent?

Laser resurfacing significantly improves skin tone, texture, and appearance, but aging will continue over time. Maintenance treatments may be needed. Daily sunscreen use and a proper skincare regimen are essential to slow future aging and sun damage.
  • Can This Treatment Be Used on Darker Skin Tones?

Certain treatments may carry increased risks for darker skin types. It is important to discuss your desired results, available treatment options, and potential risks in detail with your practitioner to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan.
  • What Happens After Treatment and When Will I See Results?

Improvements may be noticeable immediately or may develop gradually over several weeks. Healing time varies based on treatment depth and individual response, generally ranging from 1 to 28 days. For aggressive treatments, final results should not be assessed until approximately 6 months after treatment, as collagen production and remodeling continue during this time.
